The Space Between Here and There
The phraseEmbrace the Possibility always seems like a positive sort of thing to me, but recently I read an article by John O’Donohue called New Beginnings, Embracing the Terror of Possibility. As I prepared for a workshop on transitions, I remembered that new beginnings are not always planned for, enjoyed, or wanted. Even when they are welcomed, it is sometimes one of life’s greatest challenges to move forward and actually Begin, with a capital B, again. So here goes, with the hope this will give you yet another perspective on life transitions, letting go, and beginning again.
The Space Between Here and There
That space between Here and There is called Transition. It seems to be the hardest thing to bear. There are so many unknowns, so many “what ifs” and “is this the right thing?” It’s that place where our imaginations can run wild, our insecurities can grow like weeds and our self-doubt tries to turn us around, pulling us back toward the assumed security of what we already know.
I’ve had times in my life when I needed to move forward and I dreaded it, to say the least. I remember picturing myself in an airplane, waiting for the right moment to jump toward my target on the ground. I was holding on for dear life and then another Me, behind me, put a boot into my backside and said “JUMP!”
But once youjump and transition; once you arrive atThere, (the Change); you usually get reoriented and start adjusting your life to make that Change work. The Change becomes the new Here. You’ve made it safely to the other side and now you need to make this place fit your abilities, your passions, your joys and your lifestyle. Change is something you can sink your teeth into. It’s the Transition part that is fleeting, sometimes uncomfortable, and intermediary. But, it is part of a very important journey in your life.
“When a great moment knocks on the door of your life, its sound is often no louder than the beating of your heart and it is very easy to miss it.” – from letters between Boris Pasternak and Olga Ivenskaya
So listen to your heart and soul when the possibility of change presents itself, planned or not, and make it yours. Create a transition that is powerful, thought provoking, spiritual, and eye-opening. Take the opportunity during Transition to learn about yourself and your strengths. You CAN create the change you want in your life and you CAN transition into a planned or an unplanned change, and make your life rewarding in the process.
