Saying YES! To Yourself
I got an intuitive nudge to call a colleague and friend of mine the other day to catch-up and ask her opinion on some things. We chatted for about a hour – and then I hung-up and went on with my usual day-to-day activities.
Yet something she said in the conversation stuck with me and it hit me like a brick in the head later that day. It’s all about saying YES! to yourself and the opportunities that present themselves to you.
And it’s so ironic because I use this term all the time, and I even mentioned it in a video I did for the recent program I launched to help women take themselves and their businesses seriously. Yet, it took on a new meaning as I let the concept sit with me over the weekend.
As I reflected, I thought about all the changes and tremendous growth that has occurred in my work and personal life and how it’s all happened in a short amount of time (literally the last 10 months).
And I realized it’s all about saying YES. Saying Yes! to yourself when something comes into your radar that you instinctively know will help you grow and evolve as a person, and inevitably will benefit your business and personal life as well.
So as I watched the movie, Yes Man, this weekend, and the before and after transformation that Jim Carrey’s character underwent, it reminded me a lot of myself when I was working in my corporate gig, going through the motions, not questioning things, just getting through the day, trying to survive the week, and waiting for the weekend.
I won’t go into much detail, as I really recommend you watch the movie to get the full effect, but essentially at the beginning of the movie Jim Carry’s character is in a rut in his life it’s the same ol’ same ol’ day after day, and he’s having plenty of opportunities come his way to participate in life but he keeps saying NO.
Then, all of a sudden he becomes aware of a new way of being, and begins to say Yes! to every opportunity that comes his way. As a result of him saying YES! to life, his life takes on a whole new meaning and he experiences an amazing metamorphous.
And as I shut off the DVD I thought to myself – no wonder why the concept stuck, it works! I realized that in the last 10 months I’ve experienced tremendous growth and change because I’ve said YES! to myself. I’ve believed (even though I was scared, and sometimes terrified) to make a decision, I knew I was worth it, and I knew that I was the best investment I could ever make.
Think about it. Look over your bank statements from the last 10 months, what are you investing in? Are you buying a new t.v., more cloths & shoes, a new car, junk food?
And as Dr. Phil would say:How’s that working for ya?
Your investment in yourself is the best one you can make because YOU appreciate. And, as a result, your value increases, and so does your business. Yes, it’s that magical.
I don’t know any stock on the market that has that much certainty, do you?
So let me ask you againhow much investment have you made in YOU in the last 10-12 months? How many self-care investments have you made and I’m not just talking about getting your roots done, or your nails touched up, I’m talking serious growth & development in yourself?
Do some research and ask yourself: Am I saying Yes! when opportunities present themselves to me? Or are am I continually saying NO, when the Universe keeps trying to give me what I’m asking for, and what I’m cutting-out and putting on my vision board?
Remember, things only happen when you take action. You can hope for things to change, you can hope for things to show up, you can hope that a sack of money will land on your doorstep, but hoping wont’ do.
Action is where it’s at and it starts with saying YES! to yourself.
Here’s a great story that I’d like you to take to heart and see how you may have many lifeboats coming your way, but are you noticing them?
There was an old man sitting on his porch watching the rain fall. Pretty soon the water was coming over the porch and into the house. The old man was still sitting there when a rescue boat came and the people on board said, “You can’t stay here you have to come with us.” The old man replied, “No, God will save me.” So the boat left. A little while later the water was up to the second floor, and another rescue boat came, and again told the old man he had to come with them. The old man again replied, “God will save me.” So the boat left him again. An hour later the water was up to the roof and a third rescue boat approached the old man, and tried to get him to come with them. Again the old man refused to leave stating that, “God would save him.” So the boat left him again. Soon after, the man drowns and goes to heaven, and when he sees God he asks him, “Why didn’t you save me?” God replied, “I tried – I sent three boats to rescue you!”
Are you being sent life boats and answers to your prayers but aren’t noticing them and continuing to say no to yourself? Do you wish to grow your business, or escape your dead-end job, but haven’t done anything about it yet?
Simply ask yourself: Am I playing to win in life, or are am I playing not to lose?
As always it’s your choice.
