Phone Calls, Emails, & Texts, Oh My….

Our family went out to dinner last week and was ushered into a booth. My son sat between his two sisters, who proceeded to talk to him at the same time in two different ears. When my other daughter told the girls to slow down, my son looked at us and said, “Don’t worry, I can multi-hear”.

What he was really telling us was that he can hear two people at the same time and not listen to either one.

How many times during our day do we answer emails while talking on the phone, sit in a meeting and Tweet ? When we multi-task, we are actually reducing productivity. Multi-taskers are more easily distracted and retain more irrelevant information in their short term memory. It’s very hard to focus with all that junk swimming in our brains.

Each task actually takes longer when we multi-task because it takes more time for the brain to switch between tasks, than it is to focus and complete a task, one at a time.

Multi-tasking is not the key to success that many believe, it is actually a prescription for shoddy work. We are not as creative, innovative or humorous. So not only are we doing a bad job, we’re not having any fun!

You’re not talking on the phone while you’re reading this article, are you?
