Time For A Chuckle: 21 Ways To Annoy Everyone
In every speech I’ve made the past few months, individuals have commented on the level of irritation in the workplace. Be warned: it may get worse before it gets better considering many experts are predicting a jobless economic recovery for many months.
Coping mechanisms can treat the symptoms although they can’t cure the disease. To make the workplace more hospitable for you and others, consider:
1. Follow theMEDS formula. Make sure you get regular meditation, exercise, diet and sleep. By taking care of yourself, you’ll feel better and be more equipped to handle things that come your way, including snarkiness from others. Also, by taking a break from your desk and walking around, you can get a different perspective on your work challenges. You don’t always have to do 100 sit-ups to get some benefit from physical movement.
2. Recognize and appreciate people. When you catch people doing the right things and comment on it, it serves as a good tonic for both of you. For example, in a communications skills workshop I was conducting for a client last month, the participants spent time practicing giving positive and negative feedback to each other. At the end of the exercise, one individual exclaimed,Even fake feedback delivered in person feels great!
For real appreciation to work best, you should be specific in your praise. In other words, don’t just saygood job orthanks. Instead, explain what the individual did that you appreciated so he or she will know what to do next time.
3. Share a laugh. Work is serious but we don’t have to be somber all the time. Finding humor in everyday situations is a simple and effective way to release tension. That’s what firefighters do all the time. Jack Armstrong, a veteran fire chief, says that dark humor helps people keep balanced and grounded in very trying times. My co-author Kathryn McKee and I included this advice in our book, Leading People Through Disasters: An Action Guide for Preparing for and Dealing with the Human Side of Crises, especially since we heard it from other experts and had experienced it ourselves.

If you love silly nonsense like I do, you just had a good chuckle, a guffaw or jello running out of your nose. A daily dose of laughter and joy enriches all aspects of life. It is a great stress reducer and encourages a number of physical benefits including the production of endorphins and disease fighting immune cells. Finding ‘the funny’ in daily life and the human condition heals and uplifts emotionally and spiritually too. When you laugh, you relax, feel energized and are able to see the lighter side of life.
A good giggle gets your blood flowing and raises your inner vibration. We live in a vibrational Universe. What you experience in life is a mirrored reflection of your vibrational level. It’s the vibes, man! Healthy good vibrations create good experiences. Defeating bad vibrations create unwanted or ‘less than’ experiences. It’s a simple as that. When you laugh you elevate your natural vibration, your self. In this way, laughter is like a magic wand that turns negative emotions, stuck energy and static thoughts into powerfully intuitive A-HA moments that propel you forward in your creative endeavors.
When you notice that you are anxious or stressed in any way reach for a moment that will tickle your funny bone. Watch a madcap movie, read a joke book, share some fun with family and friends. You will discover that you feel lighter and have a new and better perspective on any challenges you face.
“You don’t stop laughing because you grow old. You grow old because you stop laughing.” -Michael Pitchard
