Girls Rights Week – Celebrate Each May

GIRLS INCORPORATED OF SAN DIEGO CO. TO CELEBRATE GIRLS’ RIGHTS

Carlsbad, CA Each year, Girls Incorporated of San Diego County joins 900,000 girls throughout the United States and Canada in celebrating girls’ blazing trails, being themselves, and asserting their rights during Girls Inc. Girls’ Rights Week. This year’s week runs from May 4 through May 8, 2009 with the theme: If Girls Everywhere Had Their Rights.

As part of the week, Girls Inc. of San Diego County will host a complimentary dinner celebration on Thursday, May 7 at 6 p.m. at the Carlsbad Seapointe Resort in Carlsbad. Following a social time at 5:30 p.m., Elaine Swann, Host of KOCT’s Oceanside Spectrum will be the guest speaker and will be introduced by Heather Myers, news anchor of Channel 6 News. Myers is an advisor to the Girls Inc. Board of Directors.

Girls who attend Girls Inc. research-based programs will come together on this night with leaders, business people and those from the community to see them demonstrate the importance of their rights in their own lives and envision how San Diego County would benefit if these rights were accessible to all girls. The girls’ presentation is inspired by the Girls Inc. Girls’ Bill of RightsSM, six powerful statements that illustrate how every girl is entitled to envision her best self and access the tools to strive for her full potential.

This is not something radical that we are promoting, But, maybe it should be says Lori Butler, Executive Director of Girls Inc. of San Diego County. If more girls in San Diego County new their rights — there would be less drug use, dating violence, bullying and teen pregnancy. Girls would demand respect and give respect, respect that they deserve to make healthy choices leading to success, college and more.

Other activities for the week include an essay contest around this year’s theme and the acceptance of proclamations from various government officials.

Corporate and individual sponsors for the May 7 dinner are still being sought. It is part of our annual campaign to raise funds and awareness, said Butler. We hope that those who are interested in building a society that is truly equitable for all will join us for this special night.

An open house will be held the following week on Tuesday, May 12 at 400 S. Melrose #110 in Vista for those who were unable to attend the celebration dinner.
