Why Hire A Wedding Consultant?
Congratulations on your engagement! You are excited, euphoric, nervous,
anxious, overwhelmed and feeling a bit stressed all at the same time.
This is what it feels like to plan a wedding. With so many things to
think about; time of year, flowers, venue, vendors, music, guests
lists, invitation wording, colors, bridal party members, special family
situations, vegetarians, diabetic grandparents, out of town guests and
the list goes on and on when will you have time to plan your wedding,
work and still live a normal life? Consider this the average wedding is
a 250 hour time investment, or 6 weeks of your life.
And the money, who will pay for what? Are you doing the traditional
cost breakdown? Is each set of parents contributing money and you and
your fiance will pick up the rest? What does a realistic budget look
like anyway?
You can alleviate much of this stress and unknown by hiring a professional wedding consultant.
My fiancee and I planned our wedding from out of state. We have four
sets of parents between the two of us. Our wedding planner worked out
all of the details regarding money. We did not get involved. It saved
us so much stress. She even designed a room layout for the reception
that kept all of the families separate yet close enough to the head
table so they all felt respected and represented. Everyone was happy.
By the end of the night my parents, both married to other people were
talking for the first time in 10 years.J. Salwa -
Not long ago, a wedding consultant was thought of as a luxury, only
used by the wealthy. Fast forward to today, a consultant is essential
to your health and well being!
Weddings are expensive and time consuming. We all want to save money
and time is a precious commodity that once expired, you can not
re-cooperate. With today’s hectic lifestyles, you do not have time to
compare all the options in the market, make sure you get the best deal,
and that all the finite details are in place. A wedding consultant can
take advantage of discounts not available to private parties and avoid
costly mistakes, while turning your dreams into reality. A planner has
relationships with vendors that are to your advantage! A wedding
consultant can help you stretch your dollar!
How do you hire the right consultant?
Look for Experience. This is the one area not to compromise. The
minimum number of years to either apprentice or be in business is
three. They should have planned a minimum of 50 weddings.
Ask for their EIN/tax id number. A professional will have a number
that is not their social security number. (professional vs. weekend
warrior)
Ask for proof if insurance. Professionals carry a minimum of $1,000,000.00.
Are they a member of a Professional Association? Association of
Bridal Consultants (ABC) is one of the best. Professional organizations
have a code of ethics that members must follow in order to be a member,
most require continuing education each year to stay in good standing.
Ask for referrals from the last three weddings and one that was over
a year ago. Talk to the bride, the groom as well as each set of
parents. Ask them what they liked LEAST about the planner.
Ask how many wedding a month the planner coordinates.
Do they coordinate more than one wedding a weekend? If so, ask to
meet the consultants assigned to your wedding prior to signing a
contract.
How many consultants will work your wedding? Professional consultants will have a minimum of 3.
How do they charge? If you hear the words percentage on budgetRUN.
This is not a professional way to conduct business. A professional will
charge you based on the number of hours she works or offer a package.
Personality is another factor. You have to get along with the person who may just become a dear friend along the way.
After the euphoria wears off and the reality settles in, it’s shocking
to discover how much preparation is involved. Do yourself, your
fiance, friends and family a favor, seek the advice of a professional
wedding consultant. If you follow the guidelines set above you will be
thrilled. A consultant can help you save enough money with other
vendors to cover approximately 50% of their fee. The other 50% we refer
to as insurance. This policy covers, stress, happiness, melt downs,
negotiations, irrational family member intervention and other items too
numerous to mention!
