Fighting Homelessness in New England

During the region wide 2008 power outage here in New England I was at one of my neighborhood pizza places. Sitting behind me was a family with two very young children. I couldn’t help but overhear them. They were struggling to figure out how to feed their kids and to also have some food themselves. I also heard they were living out of the local motel, but might not be able to stay there much longer. It broke my heart. They were on my mind for days after and I wished I could do something more than handing them money.

There’s a new face of homelessness in our country homeless families with children. Homeless shelters across the country are seeing an increase in families, even those with college educations, forced to leave their rental homes and bounce around from motel to motel with little money for food to feed their children. Next weekend I am riding my bike 100 miles to in an effort to raise money to support an innovative homeless shelter in Haverhill, MA called Emmaus that works every day to fight this problem.
