Barb Girson, my dear friend and colleague, shared in her My Sales Tactics ????Ezine this month that resolutions are proclamations about what we are going to dowhereas action stepsplace you further toward your growth goals. As we look to the start of a new year, are we just going to proclaim organization as something we are going to door what steps are we willing to take to live a more organized, and more productive life?

One of the first statements that resonated with me when I first started my business was organization is a process, not an end result. How very true. No matter where you are in life, NOW is a good time to get started with healthier organized living. We’ll never be completely set in life where everything has a place, as the world is constantly changing and we are smack dab in the middle of information overload and marketization. So, what action steps can we take to ensure steady growth and healthy living this year in our homes and life? Here’s a few ideas to get you started:

Write It Down: Get beyond wishing and dreaming and make a list of areas you are committed to tackling this year. Once you’ve identified them, break them down into smaller sub-tasks that can be done in manageable increments of time. Write down materials you will need and a budget for each project. Schedule Dates with Yourselfon your calendar throughout the year to work on each sub-task. Keep list handy to refer to throughout the year and track how you’ve progressed and succeeded.

Visualize. Visualize an environment around you that is clutter free and organized. Focus your thoughts on what your outcome will be and not what the area looks like now.

Dodge Distractions: Work on only the task at hand, and don’t get let your mind and fingers wonder onto other ideas or things close by. Set a timer, and reward yourself when the task is done!

Clear the Clutter: Sticking with my plan to give 10 things away each month, ask yourself a series of questions while sorting; Do I need this? Can I find it elsewhere? Who do I know that might benefit from it? Professional organizers are a valued resource for solutions on how to pass onold computers, furniture, books, eyeglasses, etc. to others who need them. I have a list of over 200 agencies that accept used equipment. Part of the reason we hold onto things, is because we recognize its value. When we can givethat value to someone else, it energizes us and makes us feel more satisfied.

Maintain Balance: It takes less effort to be organized than it takes to get organized. If an effective system is created that works well with your learning and lifestyle, then keeping it organized is easy. I tell my clients that once the effort has been made to get there, it will only take about two hours per YEAR to maintain it. 5 minutes every month, and a yearly assessment what’s been accumulated.

Setting goals and taking action steps is the ticket to success. Once you’ve experienced the sweet taste of success, your mouth will water for more.
