Living the Proverbs 31 Life – Proverbs 31:14
Proverbs 31:14 She is like the merchant ships loaded with foodstuffs; she brings her household’s food from a far [country].
The wisdom of the Proverbs 31 Woman is like that of a merchant ship loaded with foodstuff. Merchants go to far away lands and return with some of the best items those countries have to offer. I went to elementary school with a girl whose father was a seaman. Her father bought her dolls to play with from all sorts of places. As little children we thought this girl was so exotic because she had dolls that we could not even imagine existed. We had never seen television commercials for her dolls and they certainly weren’t advertised in the Christmas catalogues we used for our wish lists. We also thought her father had to be the richest man in the world to be able to go to these faraway lands and bring her back these exotic dolls.
To go to a far country for items, implies that you go after the best that there is. If you were just going to throw something together, you would not go to any far country to do so. Items from a far country, as with my friend’s dolls, are uncommon. Thus, the Proverbs 31 Woman is loaded with uncommon nourishment for her household. This speaks to wisdom. First, her being “loaded” implies that she is full of knowledge, which is a building block of wisdom. Second, her “bringing” food from this load is a picture of wisdom. Wisdom is the proper application of knowledge. Having knowledge without wisdom is useless. Only the proper application of knowledge produces fruit. For example, if my car is broken and the person “helping” me has a vast knowledge of cars, but cannot tell me what’s wrong and how to fix it, his knowledge is useless. I want my car running. I could care less how many parts my particular engine has.
So, how do you get wisdom? Wisdom is gained, again, from acquiring knowledge and then allowing God to teach you how to use that knowledge. Thus, the Proverbs 31 Woman is a woman who educates herself as best she can (acquires knowledge) and submits that education to God, relying upon His guidance.
So, get knowledge, whether formally or informally, and let God give you the wisdom to apply that knowledge. Your house will be tremendously blessed as a result.
Have a great day and I’ll see ya in the next article!
