Jewelry and the Modern Relevant Speaker

Do you remember when a woman who was speaking before an audience was expected to wear the blue suit with the bow tie scarf? Her choice of accessories was gold, pearl or diamond studs. A wedding ring or maybe a ring of some significance (signet ring, college ring, etc.) and a watch. Maybe a very simple bracelet. I do and I am so glad those days are gone.

Not only is a speaker no longer expected to conform to such a dress code, but in today’s climate she would be considered unimaginative. Her out-of-the-box ideas could be lost on the creative thinker as she would be thought of as “old fashioned.”

So what is acceptable? Las Vegas Bling? Lots of jewelry that jingles and jangles and causes a distraction? I don’t think so. What is relevant and appropriate for the modern speaker is very tasteful chunky jewelry that has a true style which is timeless in its elegance and makes a statement without causing a stir.

So, should all of the pieces match perfectly? The answer is probably “no.” Earrings or a bracelet that are worn with a necklace should tie in elements of the necklace while having their own weight, texture and personality. They complement each other while adding their own unique look. Also, it is important to put the weightier or more eye-catching pieces in places where you want to draw attention. Think carefully about your body type. Does the piece add or distract?
