Reclaim Your Energy

Did you know some of the energy you’d like more of is lurking in your home? That’s right. It is hiding in plain sightin the basement, the garage and probably the hall closet. It has been sucked right into all those places full of things we have been meaning to clear out. Are you ready to reclaim it?

There is something about spring that awakens that desire to reduce clutter in our homes and garages. For the most part we start with great intentions. Perhaps, someone in the neighbourhood has arranged a Street Sale that might spur us on, but oftentimes we get stuck in the process.

Why? While the idea of simplifying our lives appeals, the action to do so is not so easy. We live in a consumer-driven society, making it difficult to part with ourthings! Yet subconsciously that clutter drains us. We are conflicted. What keeps us from taking action? Simple, we assign a false value to much of our stuff! The excuses follow. We paid so much for an item; we should just keep it. We should give personally to someone who will appreciate its true value according to our standards rather than just donate it. Or, you might really need it someday. Have you noticed there is nosomeday on the calendar?

We accumulate news clippings, recipes, articles we are sure we will use in the future. Yet most people I know, myself included, tend to hop on the Internet anytime we need something quickly. Time to let it go! What about those sentimental items that stir memories and emotions? While it is reassuring and comforting to hold onto those, you can be more selective. Cherish what is truly meaningful, take photos of the things you want to remember fondly, but don’t need to hold onto. If you don’t remember your late aunt using that hideous teapot you inherited, why would you keep it? If it is worth money, what action do you want to take? Store it or sell it. Otherwise, it is draining your energy.

Ask yourself, what is the cost of keeping these things stored in my home? Are you tolerating guilt based on money spent? Are you wasting time constantly rearranging or searching for things? Hold that Garage Sale. You will earn back time and energy as well as a little spare cash. Please, don’t spend it on morestuff!
