The Other Side of Success

What is the other side of success? Success is most often measured in the world of business as wealth, power and influence. What about this concept? We could choose to see it as the life that brings joy in all areas. Given that perspective, imagine when I mentioned that I coach around the other side of success, how I was taken aback I was when someone suggested that failure could be the other side. Huh? We live in a world where the media would have us see success as wealth, power or fame.

I’m not suggesting it is an either or. Wealth, power or fame, any or all can be used for great things. Does the name Oprah ring a bell? However, it has been my experience that many of us just want our lives to run smoother and seem a bit more effortless. That is wealth of a different kind. Living your dream life, reaching your goals etc. doesn’t have to mean huge changes. It is just as often a little tweak here, a different perspective there and few steps that we can maintain. What is real success? We each get to decide for ourselves.

So how long does it take to make a habit stick? Conventional wisdom puts it at about 21 days. I have often found that it can takes 3 weeks to create a new habit, in the next 21 days we get confident but without watching we can also start to undo it in the following 21. Boom! We are hitting the wall, sabotaging ourselves, reverting to old habits. We all do it whether you admit to it or not. If we didn’t, the diet industry for one wouldn’t be a multi billion dollar industry. Most of us can stick to a program 3 weeks!

Things can be just humming along and a crisis comes along, etc. Since most of us put self-care at the bottom of ourto do lists. It is easy to let go without repeated practice, a change of attitude sprinkled with a hefty sense of self-worth. We have to want the change and feel we deserve the change in order to sustain through the external events that will no doubt derail us.

We need to remind ourselves that the ultimate act of love is caring for ourselves and acknowledging our own self-worth. It is bigger than our net worth any day! Now that is success!
