Get Off the Hamster Wheel
Get Off the Hamster Wheel
5 Ways to Slow Down
Do you ever felt like you’re running as fast as you can and still you can’t get everything done you need to do? What happened to the idea of taking time to enjoy your life? We’ve been programmed to live an adrenal lifestyle full of substances that are designed to keep us energized and going! It’s a push and it’s not sustainable. But you do it anyway and then you wonder why you’re exhausted and have no time to enjoy life.
I teach my clients to notice the pushes, (adrenalin) and the pulls, (passion and values) of their life. What I mean by the push and pull is simple. Our values and passions pull us forward, they give us energy. The things we embrace that we do not value or have passion for are often fueled by adrenalin – that’s a push and that’s not yummy or sustainable.
We’ve been conditioned and programmed to add more and to keep adding more to our forever lengthening to do lists. What would happen if we embraced slowing down and doing less instead of trying to keep up with the rapidly expanding demands? What would your life be like if you could take time for you without feeling guilty about not working?
When Thomas Leonard, (the father of the coaching profession), was alive he began talking about the Absence of You. The idea was to take away anything that wasn’t serving you, so you could be the best you could be. Thomas understood and taught that effectiveness in life was fueled by passion instead of adrenaline.
When you begin eliminating the things in your life that are not consistent with or congruent with your intentions, an interesting thing happens; you will experience much more energy and time too!
Here are my top 5 ways to slow down:
1. Become very clear about what you want. What do you want in terms of relationships, your physical being, your mental, emotional, financial, and your spiritual well being? You get to choose. Most of us have shut down our capacity to desire something for ourselves. Begin a list of 100 things to do, have, be, or experience before leaving the planet.
2. Get that the aspects of your life as you’re currently experiencing it are driven by your unconscious programming that was accumulated during the first 7 years of your life. It’s no longer relevant! The circumstances don’t create matter, your state of being does!
3. Whenever you’re considering doing something, ask yourself:Is the action I am considering one that moves me closer to or further from my desired end result? If the answer’s anything other than yes, eliminate this task from your to-do list.
4. Take a look at your to-do list and sort it into 4 categories: To do immediate time frame, (within the week) to do maybe someday (to be reviewed weekly) /delegate it / and dump it. Take the prescribed action for each category.
5. Let go of past mistakes and regret. Being in this moment is the only place to be, as this is where the action is! Should haves and could haves, are not taking you where you want to go. In fact they are taking you away from what you most desire. Remember, it’s not what you do that counts, it’s how you do it!
