How to Shift from Depression and Despondency to Happiness, Health and Inner Peace
Depressed and alone, I walked along the shores of Pismo Beach,
California trying to find answers that seemed to elude me. I watched
the wave’s crash into the shore. My son was building sand castles
nearby. Me? Well, my mind was a million miles away as I analyzed some
of the things the ocean had delivered. Let’s see there was a variety
of weeds, driftwood and miscellaneous odds and inns, but it was the
tiny shell that caught my eye that day. Oh, it was just a piece of what
used to be a whole shell, perhaps once a beautiful shell, but now, only
a remnant remains. But ahhhh, how it shined.
I picked up the little shell and gazed at the beauty it possessed. It
took my mind away from the stress I felt that day. Thoughts raced my
mind wondering how this little shell looked when it was whole and
complete. The thought came to me – consider the shell you held in your
hand. If this shell could tell its life story, what lessons would it
share and how could I parallel this information to resolve the many
conflicts I faced in my life at that time.
It seemed I heard the tiny shell say;”I once had beauty, purpose,
muscle, life and freedom.” “Then one day, a bird of prey attacked me.
It robbed me of my muscle and left me scattered in many pieces alone on
the beach. When it felt life could get no worse, the steep waves of the
ocean took what was left of my broken pieces of my life and dragged
them into the ocean. I knew I would never survive.”
“I had to make a choice as the waves swept me further out into the
depths of the ocean. When the waves pulled me under, I felt so
hopeless I didn’t think I would survive. I had to make a choice as the
waves swept me into the ocean:
could become angry at life, hate humanity for allowing such an awful
deed to be done to me and take as many down with me as I could.
Giving up would have taken the little shell to the bottom of the
ocean. Becoming angry and fighting society would soon destroy the
shell. For you see, what the little shell didn’t realize is the ocean
waves were smoothing out it’s rough edges while cleaning and polishing
its many pieces. The ocean waves then delivered its pieces back to the
shore as items of beauty.
I looked around the beach where I saw people using the broken shells as
art in products they were making. Others were using these broken pieces
to construct useful products like bowls, lamps and jewelry. Each piece
was an item of beauty.
When we feel hopeless, hurt or afraid, we face the same choices as the
little shell. Remember, there are times when we all feel like giving
up; it seems so easy just to walk away from the problem or succumb to
it.
